Ham Radio Camper Caravan | Part 1
The Ham Radio Camper Caravan Trailer is finally here. In this video we install some solar panels, drill and install some power cables for our solar panels, test a telescopic mast with 80 meter off center fed dipole, ran some winlink and FT8 sessions, before discussing the future of this portable ham radio project.

Can you use earphones ?
Indeed. There an earphone port on the microphone, and an adapter on the speaker/mic port just for listening.
It is 2024. Neither the supply chain nor Elecraft are what they once were. This is an expensive to buy and expensive to repair raadio. Caveat emptor.
Hej Julian! Nice project man! I haven't found your channel until recently. I'm starting a similar project myself. I'm sure your videos will be handy. Thanks for sharing.
Julian, run a fillet of caulk along the leading edge of each solar panel to prevent uplift and vibration while your caravan is in motion. Great Video, thank you.
Do you need two genasun controllers for this solar panel or is one enough?
More context please.
1 charge controller per solar panel. I use a single Genasun GV10L with this panel when charging my LiFePO4 batteries. Also 1 boost charge controller for charging the ebike
@@OH8STN Starlink just came out with the mini or like you would say the man portable satellite, so I'm trying to figure out what I would need as far as solar/ charge controller and batteries, to keep me topped off, I'm also considering an ebike and being able to charge on the go. Not sure if you did a set up video or blog post on the boost controller.
I can't believe I missed this when it came out....... GREAT content! THX for all you do for your viewers
Love the A.I rendition. Are you going to paint it?
When life sends you a gift. Embrace it unquestioning with both hands. The universe has your back!
Excellent and informative video. I may assemble this kit, albeit piece by piece as my budget allows. *73 de AF6AS*

Thank you 🙏 73 Julian oh8stn
Your Lab599 information is awesome! Can you please tell me what is the Solar Panel Watts? Thanks!
based
Are glass panels much more durable than the semi flexible ones? I know will prowse doesn’t like them.
I'm sorry, but this experiment is not verry well done nore verry wel documented. Just trowing equipment on the floor is not how you install a solar setup. Also you did not specifiy the antenna setup and how it is located in relation to the solar system. I'm running the same MPPT 87/15 and a single victron solar panel. Although at home, my antenna for 40M is a vertical mobile whip. No problems here. However I do have lot of interference from the system on the roof of my appartement.
I have been testing portable charge controllers for Ham radio for many years and followed your advice. I went through maybe 4-5 controllers and they were from bad to insanely bad. Then couple years back took your advice on Genasun. Wow! Game changer MPPT. All I get is insignificant RF on 10m. I never tested 6m or 160m. But from testing if 80m not an issue nor will 160m. I did have a Buddipole Mini solar controller that finally died. Nice but expensive unit. Limitations were it’s not MPPT and it’s max solar line voltage and current are very limited to 150w panel and below. But still great concept and works well especially for 100w and less. . But Genasun is less expensive and far more robust and efficient too. Always great content you do. Thank you !
Nice design with Victron Energy stuff! Love it!!!
I love it, makes a lot of sense!
Have a circuit layout/diagram to share?
Yes, I would like to see that.
Not yet. I'm not good with making them. I'll need to ask help to make it.
Not too sure 50 amps is enough
Excellent! This could be a model for any mobile op, for instance Field Day. Will you be doing a more detailed presentation with a parts list? I've already watched it three times trying to inventory everything. Thanks Julian!
I'll do a detailed vidro just on this board. It is just a clone of the off grid ham shack, but uses a different shunt and display. More to come 👍
Thanks for the interesting video. What application is there for Android? 73!
Nice and tidy.👍
Try making a cable assembly kit. An all in one. I’d like to how that would be done.
How can P2P be used on V/U?
Just the same like HF. The frequency doesn't matter.
I certainly hope it cost less than the original battery pack. QRP store has it going for over $500 that's insane.
Mast height is 7 meters or so?
That's right 👍
I wished they allowed faster baud rates, the old law is too outdated!
Always like your reviews
Thoughts on its alleged spurious emissions?
Take a cordless drill with the proper sized bit to drill frozen ground
That's a brilliant idea 👍
Where is Snapper?
She was inside with my wife and Tacky. Junior is so high strung, he needs more attention abd training than the others.
Survival radio? Well..... First of all how "rugged " is this going to be in an ENP Event? Then, where was this made? China? Some other questionable nation? And also, there just couldnt be one or more back door shut down command(s) imbedded? Well, you're preppers, I'm just asking some sane questions here.....and $800 to $900 for this? I think I'll just rebuild some Gonset with solidstate tube replacements wanna bet who survives?
Great worl as always...still looking for my silver bullet camper. So many abandoned ones around the lakes yet they don't want to sell
Junior looks like he is ready to go right now!
Indeed. He is always ready to go 👍
That was pretty cool
I would like to see the Amp setup. Thank you and I do like the job you have done.
Cool setup, my dude
Great and informative video, thank you! 😊
Thank you so much. I've learned tons from your renovation 🔆
From my expierence owning a Large Pop-Up Camper, I actually found it easier to make some entry points Underneath the camper. It helped preserve the integrity on the camper's sheet metal skin, and when camping in rainy weather, those entry points were very protected from the weather! When traveling, the "under carriage" of the camper rarely had problems.
excellent
Very nice!!! Thanks for sharing! Love the channel!
Can’t wait to see the upcoming parts . It’s giving me some great ideas
I would have just drilled a 2 inch hole and used a plastic PVC pipe with flex seal. I know it's a big hole. But that way you can easily put the coax through and coax does go bad.rhats why I do that
That's one way for sure. The ingress protection was most important. Used aircell 7 which has been on the tower for 23 years without going bad. The coax can slide, when theblick rings are loosened. This makes it possible to swap out the coax, by removing the connector and pulling it through.
Did the same exact thing.
Nice weatherproof solution!

I hope you remember that the roof of the camper needs to be painted to keep it waterproof.
Ghanks. Good paint, no leaks. New paint (olive drab & black) coming next spring.
I might run a bead of adhesive to the edge of the solar panels to really glue it into the roof so when driving it doesn't catch air under it, start flapping and tearing itself apart.
Thanks for that tip. Got it done 👍
You helped me make a decision on going for this G90 rig for HF go kit radio. I did add a pair of 25W solar panels to my planned self aligning charging rig just to make sure I have enough juice coming in. I'll be looking at antenna options....I can now see a compound bow as part of the antenna rig for HF. To set a vertical antenna up on a tree. 😂Thank you!!!
Look forward to seeing what you come up with for mast and antenna deployment with the camper shack. I fabricated a hitch mounted tip over/telescoping 25' mast with guy wire system.
